Chapter Eighteen

Mike put the phone down and finished clearing up the kitchen. It had been fun being just the three of them again and he and the boys had had a real old fashioned meal and a chat about his books. They were still interested and wanted to know where the story was off to now. Their visit to the market had provided Robbie with a new Yoda model but the twins had not found anything they wanted. They had told Mike about their adventure with PC Lode and their enemy having a poo behind the Weeing Tree and they all laughed about it. Mike was still young enough to find such scenarios amusing. Finally they went to bed just before Tom called and Mike, after taking a final look round the kitchen, followed suit.

Laying there alone for the first time in months, he thought about his encounter that afternoon while walking Willie by the stream that ran from the school grounds to the Rilton Castle lake. The path ran alongside copses of alders and sycamores and it was a place he remembered with great affection, as it was where he had lost his virginity. Hughie Strong. Good name, very appropriate. They had been slight friends at school but there had always been something odd in their relationship. One day, when Mike had been fifteen, he had been walking alone along this very dirt track when Hughie had come along in the opposite direction. He had just looked at Mike then led the way into the trees and put Mike’s hand on the very large erection jutting from the front of his school trousers. Mike remembered the feel of the stretched fabric, the dryness in his throat as he pulled down the zipper and the size of the engorged organ that had popped out. He had knelt down and taken it in his mouth and Hughie had come very quickly. Afterwards, over several meetings, they expanded their sexual acts to full penetration. Hughie was now an assistant to a Member of Parliament, married with a daughter. For him, it had been some relief from sexual frustration. For Mike, the start of a very happy sex life.

He always thought of Hughie when he came here and was thinking of him when he almost walked into the figure standing, legs apart, blocking the path.

He did not recognise the man, and this wasn’t some sort of gay pick up. The look on the man’s face told him that. There had been anger and confusion; the guy was obviously under a great deal of stress. Willie, oblivious to the tension in the air, wagged his tail and sniffed the stranger’s feet.

‘Can I help you?’

‘You’re Mike Ash.’

‘Yes. I am. Who are you?’

‘Ryan Richardson. David’s dad.’

The face, suntanned and healthy looking, showed every muscle locked, tense.

‘Oh. I’m very sorry about what has happened to your son.’

‘Did you know him? Meet him?’

Mike, sensing where this conversation might be leading, shook his head.

‘He wasn’t here long enough. My partner and I and the kids were up in Scotland when you moved in and we’ve been busy since.
